Abstract #301470

This is the preliminary program for the 2003 Joint Statistical Meetings in San Francisco, California. Currently included in this program is the "technical" program, schedule of invited, topic contributed, regular contributed and poster sessions; Continuing Education courses (August 2-5, 2003); and Committee and Business Meetings. This on-line program will be updated frequently to reflect the most current revisions.

Abstract:

An algorithm for sampling on curves and surfaces was developed by the authors (1997). For curves (x(t), y(t)) in the plane or (x(t), y(t), z(t)) in space, a < t < b, where x, y, and z are piecewise continuously differentiable functions, points can be sampled by choosing t values from a to b non-uniformly so that t intervals get weights proportional to their arc length. For a surface a similar procedure is followed with a surface area element replacing the arc length element. We demonstrate the algorithm for two curves, one in the plane and one in space, and for two surfaces, one developable and one not.
