Abstract #301469

This is the preliminary program for the 2003 Joint Statistical Meetings in San Francisco, California. Currently included in this program is the "technical" program, schedule of invited, topic contributed, regular contributed and poster sessions; Continuing Education courses (August 2-5, 2003); and Committee and Business Meetings. This on-line program will be updated frequently to reflect the most current revisions.

Abstract:

Mixtures of multinomial models, such as the generalized beta binomial and the Ewens sampling models, are used to investigate cluster sampling designs to optimize species discovery in heterogeneous environments. The sampling design problem is, subject to cost constraints, to find the optimum number of clusters and units within a cluster to maximize the number of species encountered. The results are applied to the design of environmental surveys and exploration of genetic diversity.
