Abstract:

This paper presents estimates of the wealth holdings of U.S. families in the late 1990s based on the 1996 panel of the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP). Wealth, or net worth, is measured as the difference between assets and liabilities. Estimates of ownership rates and holdings of major types of assets and liabilities are presented for all families and for subpopulations defined by demographic characteristics. Differences in the accumulation of wealth by age cohort are discussed, and the relationship between income and wealth is examined, with a focus on low-income families. Limitations of the SIPP estimates are discussed along with the unique strengths of the SIPP data.
