Abstract:

Motivated by varying levels of student success in introductory statistics courses, we determine possible explanatory variables for the differing levels of success. Undergraduate students enrolled in Introductory statistics at a small liberal arts college were studied using their final course percentage as the outcome variable of interest. Multiple regression was performed using model selection techniques with independent variables including (among others) gender, high school grade point average, SAT scores (verbal and quantitative), and current credit hour enrollment. The resulting model is assessed and the predictive value of the model is presented, as well as the possible use of the model for placement purposes of incoming freshmen students. We also present similar results for calculus courses, a comparison of the statistics and calculus models, and an overall model using data for both courses simultaneously.
