Abstract:

This paper discusses how coding errors in the March 2001 Accuracy and Coverage Evaluation (ACE) were corrected in a subsample of the data for the A.C.E. Revision II estimates. We used two data sources--interviews from the March 2001 ACE and interviews from an evaluation of a subsample of the ACE--to determine residence status. Clerically coding residence status using these two interviews would be the preferred coding method. However, due to time constraints, we supplemented a clerical coding of the interview results with an automated coding of keyed data. Combining data from four sources-- the March 2001 ACE clerical coding, an earlier clerical recoding of some cases, the automated coding of keyed data, and a new clerical review-- provided the best coding possible given time constraints. We will discuss the coding procedures, data used to improve the quality of the coding, as well as the results of the coding and the implications of using supplemental keyed data.
