Abstract - #301417
Title: The Risk for Primary Adult-Onset Brain Cancer Associated with Cigarette Smoking and Other Lifestyle Behaviors in a Large, Multi-ethnic, Managed Care Cohort
Author(s): Jimmy Thomas Efird*+
Companies: Stanford University
Address: PO Box 303, Palo Alto, CA, 94303,
Keywords: gliomas ; cigarettes ; marijuana ; alcohol ; coffee ; primary adult-onset brain cancer
Abstract:

Risk for PABC among women increased with increasing packs of cigarettes smoked per day (>0 to <1 packs per day: RR=1.7, CI=0.9-3.1; 1 to 2 packs per day: RR=1.8, CI=0.8-4.1; >2 packs per day: RR=3.0, CI=0.9-10.6; p for trend=0.04), adjusting for cigar and pipe smoking, patient age, sex, race, education, alcohol use and coffee consumption. A similar pattern was not observed for men. Individuals who smoked marijuana at least once a month, adjusting for cigarette smoking (packs smoked per day) and for the factors noted above, had a 2.8 (CI=1.3-6.2) fold increased risk for PABC; RR for less than once a month=0.6 (CI=0.1-4.4). Relative risk for PABC increased with increasing consumption of coffee (<1 cup per day: RR=1.0; 1-2 cups per day: RR=1.1, CI=0.7-1.8; 4-6 cups per day: RR=1.6, CI=0.9-2.8; >7 cups per day: RR=1.7, CI=0.8-3.6; p for trend=0.05).
