Abstract #301387

This is the preliminary program for the 2003 Joint Statistical Meetings in San Francisco, California. Currently included in this program is the "technical" program, schedule of invited, topic contributed, regular contributed and poster sessions; Continuing Education courses (August 2-5, 2003); and Committee and Business Meetings. This on-line program will be updated frequently to reflect the most current revisions.

Abstract:

In many experiments the hypothesis of interest requires one to compare the similarity between groups of curves. We propose to test the hypothesis of no difference between groups of curves using the Pearson sample correlation coefficient applied to every possibly pair of curves within each group. A vector of correlations is then obtained for each group and the means of each of the vectors are computed and averaged to construct the test statistic. It is shown that this test statistic is a U-statistic with an asymptotic normal distribution and its asymptotic mean and variance are obtained. Results from an empirical power study are reported and the method is illustrated using ganglioside data from old and young rats.
