Abstract:

The properties of methods to fit models to data are generally well known when the model assumptions are true. However, one key implicit assumption is that the sample design used to collect the data is not informative. We describe what this means when applied to complex survey data and discuss alternative methods of analysis that are valid whether or not the designs are informative. Emphasis is placed on the target parameters when models are used both to motivate the analysis and to make assumptions about what is random.
