Abstract:

A common question among telecommunication engineers is, "Will Voice over IP (VoIP) work on my existing data network?" (VoIP telephony is a way to transmit voice calls using IP packets sent over a data network.) To answer this question, we collect voluminous data concerning the topology of the network, the health (utilization and error counts) of the routers and switches, and end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) measures of synthetic call data. These types of data are large (gigabytes collected over a few days) and complex, in that the analysis must relate the QoS data to the paths the calls took through the network. Moreover, the results and relationships can vary over time. The goal of the analysis is to use the commonality of the paths of the synthetic voice calls to determine network bottlenecks that could be causing degradation of the end-to-end QoS measurements. We will demo an interactive graphical system that is used by the network engineers to analyze such data.
