Abstract:

Data mining has emerged as an essential tool for practitioners, researchers, and consultants, due primarily to technological advances in data collection, tranmission, and storage. As statistics curricula are being revised at both the undergraduate and MBA level, data mining is being considered as a potential additional topic. An overview of one approach to including data mining tools in the core curriculum of an MBA program is presented. The advantages and disadvantages of covering the fundamentals of data mining in such a program are noted, along with the technological implications, potential applications; and the need for development of datasets, case studies, and other teaching materials to enhance the accessibility of the tools.
