Abstract:

High-quality measurements of network dynamics, such as link delays, are increasingly important to the design and operation of large communications networks. The use of end-to-end measurements of multicast traffic--traffic destined for multiple receivers--allows the estimation of network internal characteristics. However, the number of possible outcomes in multicast schemes grows exponentially with the number of nodes. We introduce a bicast probing scheme that addresses this difficulty by collecting end-to-end packet delay information from targeted pairs of network nodes. We investigate the estimation of of internal network link delay distributions under various models including the presence of temporally dependent traffic. An efficient estimator is introduced and its asymptotic and small sample properties are established.
