Abstract:

We will discuss an activity that allows students to compare the flavor longevity of two different brands of chewing gum. In completing the activity students generate, collect, and analyze data. The data collection portion of the activity is completed interactively. We developed the activity to illustrate paired (matched) samples and assessing normality (in order to decide on an appropriate inference procedure to apply). The analysis of paired sample data will be discussed at an introductory level and assessing normality will be discussed at an intermediate level. In addition, we will discuss an extension that illustrates some basic concepts in survival analysis.
