Author(s): Stephen E. Fienberg*+

Abstract:

The field of confidentiality statistical disclosure limitation is firmly rooted in pioneering papers by Tore Dalenius that (1) made clear the statistical nature of the challenge of the protection of confidentiality and (2) introduced ingenious approaches such as the method of data swapping for limiting disclosure. We review the developments in the area of data swapping, for both continuous and categorical data, that have built on Dalenius' approach and discuss methods for their evaluation.
