Abstract:

This paper will compare grandparents' response items from Census 2000 and the Census 2000 Supplementary Survey (C2SS), as well as the American Community Survey 2000 (ACS). Data will be evaluated to determine the extent to which the C2SS/ACS was successful in replicating long-form Census data for this special population. Three levels of geography will be examined, national, state, and the 31 counties selected for ACS test sites. The population under study are those who were age 30 years and over in 2000. Respondents were asked if they were living with any of their own grandchildren under the age of 18. Those who answered "yes" were asked if they were responsible for most of the basic needs of their coresident grandchildren and how long they had been responsible for them. Preliminary analysis has shown that the differences between Census and C2SS data seem reasonable given sampling error. However, the 90 percent confidence intervals around the C2SS estimates are so large that in smaller areas, the usefulness of the data may be questionable.
