Abstract:

The household component of the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS-HC) is designed to provide annual, nationally representative estimates of health care use, health status, health conditions, medical expenditures, sources of payment, insurance coverage, and health care access for the U.S. civilian noninstitutionalized population. Both person-level and household-level data are collected. The MEPS-HC consists of an overlapping panel design in which persons in a given panel are interviewed five times over a 30-month period. The MEPS-HC nonresponse adjustment procedure uses weighting classes to adjust the weights to reduce nonresponse bias. As part of ongoing efforts to ensure the accuracy of the MEPS survey estimates, using the most recent MEPS data, this paper (1) evaluates the variables most important in reducing bias in survey estimates resulting from dwelling unit nonresponse (complete nonresponse) and (2) evaluates variables as most effective to correct for survey attrition by persons across the various rounds of data collection.
