Abstract:

By combining tax returns and information returns in one database, the Statistics of Income (SOI) Division has made it possible to study trends in the deferral of income for retirement purposes, as well as the withdrawing of these assets. By adding demographic information collected by the Social Security Administration to the database, SOI has made it possible to further classify the trends by age and gender of the taxpayer. Information returns in the SOI database show both contributions to and withdrawals from employer-sponsored plans, such as the 401(k), and Individual Retirement Accounts, such as the IRA and the Roth IRA. In the case of Individual Retirement Accounts, the fair market value is shown as well.

The Statistics of Income Division began collecting these data on an annual basis for Tax Year 1996. Data for Tax Year 2000 are just now becoming available. The authors plan to show any trends that may appear in these data during this period. Differences between various income, age, and gender groups will be explored.
