Abstract:

This study assessed the influence of acupuncture on the physiological and analgesic response to noxious heat stimuli in normal volunteers. Following preliminary screening to calibrate the pain stimuli and to establish the reliability of reported sensory responses, 11 subjects were each evaluated in three treatment sessions, one each for electro-, manual and placebo acupuncture. These sessions consisted of treatment by one of the three acupuncture modes, preceded and followed by identical sequences of pain stimuli. Subjects reported sensory and affective pain responses, and heart rate, palm skin temperature, skin conductance response and blood pressure were monitored. Details of the design of this experiment and the analysis and interpretation of the results will be presented.
