Abstract:

Working biostatisticians must learn to apply their statistical skills in the context of personal interactions with physicians and other medical or biological researchers. The ongoing consulting process generally requires the biostatistician to learn about the substantive area of application, play a fundamental role in setting scientific objectives, and explain complex statistical ideas to nonstatisticians. Over time, these activities often end up defining the biostatistician's professional life and, ideally, motivating methodological research. In particular, medical biostatisticians must be acutely aware of the ethical implications of their work. We will discuss a wide variety of scientific, ethical, social, and professional issues that arise in the day-to-day activities of a working biostatistician.
