Abstract:

Health professionals are often required to form opinions using data from several tables, possibly generated from different sources. This paper illustrates a method for combining tables of count data using Bayesian methods. Combining tables can be problematic for several reasons. Often, not all cells will contain data when multiple tables are combined. Also, since the same level of aggregation over covariates is often not available in each to the constituent tables, some data will exist only on the margins. These constraints mean that some mortality risk factors could be confounded with the tables themselves. Bayesian methods are particularly attractive in this setting, since prior information on the relative strength of competing risk factors can be included in the analysis. We illustrate the method by combining data from three tables, where information about particular risk factors is not present in all the tables.
