Abstract:

Statisticians and quality professionals earn the opportunity for leadership roles in research, business, and industry by demonstrating that they have the skills required for such roles, above and beyond their technical expertise. These leadership skills include strategic thinking, ability to drive change, effective communication with broad audiences, teamwork and facilitation, and project planning and execution. In recent years the extensive popularity of Six Sigma initiatives has provided increased leadership opportunity to people who possess these skills, in addition to solid statistical skills. Unfortunately, few graduate or undergraduate programs in statistics provide students with opportunities to begin developing their leadership skills prior to beginning their careers. As a result, statisticians, and those with strong statistical backgrounds, are often overlooked when these leadership positions are filled. This talk will suggest specific opportunities for leadership skill development within an academic framework. Various examples will be given, with emphasis on a recent graduate course on structured process improvement utilizing the Six Sigma approach at Virginia Tech.
