Abstract:

The Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) is an ongoing survey designed to produce annual estimates of the health care utilization, expenditures, sources of payment, and insurance coverage of the U.S. civilian noninstitutionalized population. A new panel is selected annually, and data are collected from the sampled persons in each panel 5 times over a 30-month period to obtain medical event and expenditure data for two consecutive years. A methodology will be demonstrated for following treatment of adults diagnosed with diabetes over a 2-year period. Starting in 2000, a supplement was added to the MEPS to provide data about specific diagnostic tests for people with diabetes and access to care and satisfaction with care items. The methodology discussed will show the availability of MEPS data for people with diabetes and how these data can be used to indicate conformance with treatment guidelines. The application of appropriate weights to account for survey nonresponse and for calculation of variances from the MEPS complex survey design will also be discussed.
