Author(s): Stephen E. Fienberg*+

Address: Dept. of Statistics, Pittsburgh, PA, 15213,
Keywords: confidentiality ; disclosure ; homeland security
Abstract:

Government statisticians have long worried about ways to keep confidential the data provided by respondents to surveys and censuses, and preventing inadvertent (indirect) disclosure has been the focus of much current research. With the growth of administrative databases in various domains and their use for homeland security and related systems to detect bioterrorism, new issues are arising almost daily. We discuss issues in confidentiality and disclosure limitation quite broadly, and new challenges for statisticians in this area.
