Title: The Welfare Loss from Innovations in Antidepressant Pharmaceuticals

Keywords: limited dependent variable estimation ; moral hazard ; price indexes
Abstract:

When new goods are added to the commodity bundle, one usually concludes that there has not been any loss in welfare. However, because of the moral hazard effects of medical insurance, this is not necessarily true for the introduction of new medical goods. This study shows that the introduction of new types of antidepressants between 1988 and 1995 imposed a welfare loss because of the moral hazard effects. Additionally, I show that the price index for antidepressant treatments is no longer monotonically increasing in the prices of antidepressants. Large increases in the prices of the new medicines will actually reduce the price index.
