Abstract:

This analysis explores reasons for the doubling of marijuana use between 1992 and 1997 based on data from the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA). The NHSDA is the primary source of information on the use of illicit drugs in the U.S. population of persons aged 12 and older. It is a cross-sectional survey that has been collected annually since 1990. A number of potential causes are explored, including increased use of "gateway" drugs such as alcohol and cigarettes, changing social influences such as the decrease in antidrug media messages, shifts in the demographic composition of the populace, changes in the balance of risk and protective factors for substance use, and changes in the rate of youth initiation of marijuana. Analytic reasoning is used to better understand the implications of existing statistics for conclusions about causality.
