Abstract:

The purpose of our research is to form a small data library of two and multiple treatment designs and correlational studies that can be used to help behavioral science students learn to use and interpret statistics. The library includes data sets that meet the following criteria: (a) by inspection the data were judged interesting to psychology and other behavioral science students, or the data were based on an important or "classic" research study; and (b), the study contained sufficient information (e.g., treatment means, standard deviations, and sample size, or graphs with which to estimate these statistics) to simulate the real data. In addition to the data, we provide the user with an extended abstract that summarizes the study purpose, methods and design, and a brief summary and interpretation of the results. To foster greater understanding of statistics, for some of the data sets, the data are further modified to illustrate the effects of deviations from normality, heterogeneity of variance, changes in sample size and error variability, and the effects of outliers and influential observations on the results.
