Abstract #300809

This is the preliminary program for the 2003 Joint Statistical Meetings in San Francisco, California. Currently included in this program is the "technical" program, schedule of invited, topic contributed, regular contributed and poster sessions; Continuing Education courses (August 2-5, 2003); and Committee and Business Meetings. This on-line program will be updated frequently to reflect the most current revisions.

Abstract:

For many hydrological applications, especially flash flood warning and urban drainage management, a good short-period forecast of heavy rainfall is required. However, the deterministic nowcasting of thunderstorm motion and development has proved a difficult problem in meteorology due to the short spatial and temporal continuity of convective systems. An approach is presented here that efficiently parameterizes spatio-temporal dynamic models in a hierarchical framework for nowcasting such physical processes as observed from radar reflectivity images.
