Abstract:

Random-Digit Dialing methods are often used to obtain population-based controls in case-control studies. In a typical scenario, researchers seek controls that match the cases on demographic variables such as age and gender, possibly screening for health and other characteristics. This paper proposes a method to estimate the number of households that will need to be reached in order to obtain the necessary controls. The estimate is based on comparing the prevalence of matching demographic variables in the population to the prevalence of the demographic variables in the cases. The estimation procedure is evaluated through simulation. The results indicate that the procedure provides good estimates for the required number of household contacts.
