Abstract:

The events of September 11, 2001 and the anthrax mailings that followed resulted in a strong interest in homeland security. As part of this effort, a team at Los Alamos National Laboratory was tasked with assessing different response strategies to a smallpox attack in the United States. A large-scale epidemiological simulation model (EpiSims) was created for this purpose. This talk details the development of the general disease and transmission models that underpin EpiSims, the process of parameterizing EpiSims for smallpox, and the response strategies that were considered.
