Abstract - #300793
Title: Using Simulation Methods in Statistics Instruction: Evaluating Estimators of Variability
Author(s): Bruce E. Trumbo*+ and Eric A. Suess
Companies: California State University, Hayward and California State University
Address: 27047 Belfast Lane, Hayward, CA, 94542-2432,
Keywords: range estimate of sigma ; simulation ; estimator evaluation ; teaching ; bootstrap (parametric) ; control chart
Abstract:

Statistics instruction for the current job market must include both theoretical principles and modern computer methods. Combining these objectives, we use computer simulations to illustrate principles of evaluating estimators (bias, MSE, etc.) with emphasis on both numerical and graphical output. Typical example detailed: properties of the range of a small sample as an estimator of population standard deviation (used in industrial control charts). Software: Minitab, R, S-Plus. Level: Intro. Engineering Statistics through M.S.
