Many key tasks in computer network monitoring, such as load balancing and the detection of anomalies (e.g., DoS attacks, link failures, and routing loops), fundamentally require a whole-network perspective. However, most existing methods of computer network traffic analysis are applied to measurements only on a link-by-link basis. Therefore, there is a clear need for methods allowing a simultaneous analysis of traffic across multiple network links, that is, for methods of "spatial" traffic analysis. We present ongoing work on this topic. A key challenge is posed by the fact that the "space" in question, deriving from a network, is not some Euclidean subspace but rather a graph. We focus on the problem of developing analyses sensitive to spatial scale and introduce a framework for graph-based wavelets that generalizes the traditional wavelet transform accordingly. In connection with this development, we also attempt to provide a framework for characterizing the underlying spatial autocorrelation structure. Illustrations are provided using data from the Abilene network operated by the Internet2 project.
