Abstract:

The post-calculus introductory (applied) statistics course in some places has a large computer science enrollment. Many textbooks for this level are focused on engineers and other sciences exclusively. They lack examples, data sets and data analysis projects for the computer science major. Half of these computer science majors move on to a probability course in their department that will teach them advanced probability models useful in determining performance of algorithms and other procedures. Other computer science majors just never take another course in statistics. For the two groups, it would be desirable to have examples and data sets and projects connected to what they do in their fields to see how statistics is useful for them.Those examples and data sets are also useful for the noncomputer science major, since they will see a fascinating field of application of statistics other than their own. Everybody loves computers. In this talk I will introduce a few of the activities and data sets that I have compiled with the computer science major in mind. I will discuss how the activity works, how it was presented to students, and the students' reactions.
