Abstract:

There has been increasing interest in the analysis of recurrent event data. In many situations, a terminating event like death can occur during the follow-up period. Furthermore, the death time can be dependent on the recurrent event history. In this paper we consider frailty models for the recurrent events data in the presence of such a terminal event. We define proportional hazard models for the recurrent events and the terminal event. Covariate information can be taken into account in the proportional hazard model. The dependence is modeled by conditioning on a shared frailty that is included linearly in both hazard functions. Maximum likelihood estimation and inference are carried out through E-M algorithm with Metropolis-Hastings method. An analysis of hospitalization and death data for dialysis patients is presented to illustrate the proposed methods. This model avoids the difficulties encountered in alternative approaches which attempt to specify a dependent joint distribution with marginal proportional hazards.
