Abstract:

Historically, the default approach in environmental risk assessment has been to choose a single study as the basis upon which to develop regulatory standards. Often, however, a careful synthesis of information over several endpoints from several different studies may provide a more reliable and appropriate basis for risk assessment. We explore the use of Bayesian hierarchical models as a meta-analytic tool for such multi-outcome, multi-study environmental risk assessments. Issues we consider include sample size requirements for the validity of existing two-stage approximations to a fully Bayesian analysis, adjustments for varying study quality, and the estimation of a global Benchmark Dose. We apply the methods to data from a National Academy of Sciences project evaluating the effect of in-utero methylmercury exposure on multiple neurological outcomes.
