Abstract:

Accurate determination of the required sample size for survival studies involves various factors that are either unique to these studies or are not typically considered in nonsurvival studies. These include the survival distributions, censoring distributions, patient accrual patterns, rates of loss to follow-up and noncompliance, and lag in the treatment effect. We will discuss the potential impact of these factors on sample size, and the methods that have been proposed to account for them. In addition, we will discuss another potentially important factor, informative noncompliance, which has received little attention.
