Title: Exploring the Consistency of Race Reporting in Census 2000 and the Census Quality Survey

Abstract:

Census 2000 was the first decennial census to allow people to self-report more than one race. Doing so meant that data on race collected in Census 2000 are no longer comparable with previous censuses and other data collection efforts. The federal government and researchers need to understand how allowing respondents to report more than one race effect comparison under the one race reporting system and implications for future data collections involving race. To facilitate comparisons between Census 2000 and household surveys which instruct respondents to mark one or more races, and data collection systems that allow only one race reporting, the Census Bureau conducted the Census Quality Survey (CQS), in summer 2001. The CQS was a nationally representative sample of about 60,000 households where people who reported more than one race in Census 2000 were oversampled. The major objective of the study was to produce a datafile that will improve users' ability to make comparison between Census 2000 data on race and other data sources that asked for a single race to be reported.
