Title: Software Metrics and Visualization Tools: Toward a Redefinition of Survey Documentation

Abstract:

Obtaining effective documentaion of computerized survey instruments--some interpretable version of the questionnaire that could allow evaluators and users to understand the paths through the questionnaire and gauge its complexity--has been an elusive goal in survey research. This presentation, based on a talk delivered at a National Research Council Workshop on Survey Automation, describes ways in which mathematical and graph theoretic notions of complexity have been applied to describing general software code. The tools used to assess software complexity raise interesting possibilities for documenting CAPI instruments, including methods of getting better insight into the modularity and potential logical traps in CAPI instruments during the design process. In particular, the ideas of cyclomatic complexity and essential complexity will be illustrated, along with their potential applications in CAPI work.
