Abstract:

Prescreening cases for geographic eligibility in a survey is a cost-effective technique that can be utilized when the sample is drawn from listed telephone numbers. The numbers can be matched with an address and classified as inside or outside the target area using geocoding software. For unlisted numbers in a RDD sample, conventional address matching provides no information for prescreening of cases based on geography. Several vendors do, however, offer tracing information on a portion of unlisted numbers. These data come from various sources, including warranty cards, web surveys, and other secondary listings. This paper aims to assess the quality of these data by comparing them with results captured in completed screeners from the second round of REACH 2010. Cost and quality data will be compiled under the assumption that the cases were passively prescreened alone or actively screened alone. Recommendations for future rounds and the utility of these data in general will be presented.
