Abstract:

Statistics is a hot topic in K-12 mathematics! Whether referred to as statistical literacy, quantitative literacy, or data analysis, the topic is one of the key components of the mathematics curriculum. The NCTM Principles and Standards for School Mathematics and the NAEP Framework emphasize probability and statistics, and the Advanced Placement Statistics Program continues to grow. Building a nucleus of teachers who can effectively teach the data analysis called for at the K-12 level heavily depends on cooperation among mathematical scientists (including statisticians) and teacher educators. An integral part of this preparation is the use of technology in the classroom. Technology can enable teachers to provide instruction that is less calculation based and more concept oriented. Experiences will be shared of efforts through ASA and the University of Georgia to promote statistical education with teacher educators and with exposing teacher educators to the available technology and resources for effective instruction in data analysis to students at K-12.
