This is the preliminary program for the 2003 Joint Statistical Meetings in San Francisco, California. Currently included in this program is the "technical" program, schedule of invited, topic contributed, regular contributed and poster sessions; Continuing Education courses (August 2-5, 2003); and Committee and Business Meetings. This on-line program will be updated frequently to reflect the most current revisions.

Abstract:

Wavelets are basic functions with particular mathematical properties that make them useful for various applications. They are already widely used in signal and image processing, and have begun to be applied to various statistical problems, including nonparametric regression and functional data analysis. We will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of wavelet-based approaches in statistical modeling, and focus on which type of problems can benefit most from these approaches.
