Abstract:

The goal of a locator test in educational assessment is to obtain the estimation of an examinee's ability given the underlying scale. The appropriate level of actual test is then assigned to the examinee. Currently, the cut scores to classify students into different levels are established by the test information function. Because obtaining the accurate ability estimation for an individual with a short locator test is desirable but challenging, discriminant analysis is applied to aid the ability classification. This paper investigates different methods of discriminant analysis on a locator by comparing the misclassification rate with that of the traditional approaches. Simulated as well as real data from adult basic skills in Reading, Mathematics, and Language are studied. The preliminary results show discriminant analysis produces lower error rate than the traditional approaches. Multidimensional information captured by the discrimination contributes to lower error rate.
