Abstract:

Students' attitudes toward statistics are important. Many of us believe that these attitudes impact classroom climate, achievement, course completion, and the use of statistical thinking outside the classroom. Because attitudes are important, we need to be able to assess them well. Using an extensive development process, I created the Survey of Attitudes Toward Statistics (SATS) for this purpose. In my presentation, I will summarize what we currently know about post-secondary students' attitudes toward statistics, including the important components of these attitudes and why we want students to leave our statistics courses with positive attitudes. My discussion draws on my experience in developing and using the SATS, as well as the growing literature in this area.
