Abstract #300432

This is the preliminary program for the 2003 Joint Statistical Meetings in San Francisco, California. Currently included in this program is the "technical" program, schedule of invited, topic contributed, regular contributed and poster sessions; Continuing Education courses (August 2-5, 2003); and Committee and Business Meetings. This on-line program will be updated frequently to reflect the most current revisions.

Title: An Economic Model for EWMA and MEWMA Control Charts with In-Control and Out-of-Control Regions

Abstract:

In some industrial applications of quality control charts, it is not relevant to detect small-magnitude shifts, Woodall (1985). Therefore, it is possible to define an in-control region (shifts not to be detected) where ARL has to be maximum, and an out-of-control region (shifts to be detected) where ARL has to be minimum. An economic model, with possible statistical restrictions, for the optimum design of EWMA and MEWMA control charts is introduced, taking into account the previous restrictions and the past process behavior in the in-control region. Genetic algorithms have been used to minimize the average cost. A friendly Windows software has been developed to help the practitioner to use this model.
