Abstract:

Practicing physical and biological scientists seldom use statistical methods. Experimental design is unknown; the philosophy and methods of empirical modeling are rarely applied--and when they are, the statistics of the 1950s is the standard. Are modern statistical methods irrelevant to scientific practice? Or do scientists not appreciate the relevance? Is the statistical education of scientists deficient? Or is scientific education of statisticians the obstacle? Communications, marketing--do computer scientists succeed where we fail? We shall probe these and other possible reasons for this sad state of affairs and propose creative ways to deal with them. Participants should come prepared to think out of the box and challenge their personal and professional biases.
