Abstract:

Following the 2001 Canadian Census, Statistics Canada conducted three studies in order to publish an estimate of the net coverage error. The Reverse Record Check produces estimates for both undercoverage and overcoverage. The Collective Dwelling Study is used to estimate the number of duplicate enumerations between collective and private dwellings. Finally, the goal of the Automated Match Study (AMS) is to produce an estimate of the number of persons who were enumerated in two different private dwellings. The results of these studies will be used to compute the official population estimates. The purpose of the paper is to describe the methodology of the AMS. It is based on the verification of pairs of households considered as similar in terms of their geographic proximity and the demographic profiles of the persons who make them up. Although it also uses computer matching operations, this methodology differs from the one used by the USBC to estimate duplicate enumerations. Some results will also be presented.
