Abstract #300371

This is the preliminary program for the 2003 Joint Statistical Meetings in San Francisco, California. Currently included in this program is the "technical" program, schedule of invited, topic contributed, regular contributed and poster sessions; Continuing Education courses (August 2-5, 2003); and Committee and Business Meetings. This on-line program will be updated frequently to reflect the most current revisions.

Abstract:

Incomplete follow-up poses a serious challenge for the analysis of lifetime medical cost. We have argued that joint modeling with survival time might be necessary for identifiability (Huang and Lavota 2002, Huang 2002). With a general cost accumulation process, Huang proposed a joint model for semiparametric regression. We consider the special case that cost accumulates over hospitalizations until death. Two new and nested joint models are suggested, aiming at lifetime hospitalization cost as a mark of death and at the cost accumulation process. The former is more robust, but the latter can take advantage of all the data available. Inference procedures are formulated. Numerical results are provided and the three models are compared.
