Abstract #300330

This is the preliminary program for the 2003 Joint Statistical Meetings in San Francisco, California. Currently included in this program is the "technical" program, schedule of invited, topic contributed, regular contributed and poster sessions; Continuing Education courses (August 2-5, 2003); and Committee and Business Meetings. This on-line program will be updated frequently to reflect the most current revisions.

Title: Negative Correlations and Particle Systems
Author(s): Thomas Liggett*+
Companies: University of California, Los Angeles
Address: 12310 Stanwood Dr., Los Angeles, CA, 90066-1057,
Keywords: exclusion process ; negative association ; correlation inequalities
Abstract:

Twenty-five years ago, Harris proved that the class of positively associated probability measures is preserved by fairly general continuous-time Markov processes, including attractive spin systems. On the other hand, negative correlation inequalities have been used frequently in the analysis of certain particle motion models. In this talk, we will discuss analogues of Harris's theorem for the preservation of various negative correlation properties by systems of independent Markov chains and by symmetric exclusion processes.
