Abstract:

In today's environment, many statisticians are finding that they need to ransition from passive consultants into proactive technical leaders in order to enhance their impact and influence. This is creating an immediate need to begin developing some of the skills required for such roles earlier, especially in graduate school. Students who enter the workplace competent in leadership skills are more likely to make a significant impact on expanding the role that statistics plays in all aspects of scientific research. This talk will present a brief survey of necessary leadership skills and several ways in which students can develop those skills while still in school. Examples will be drawn from contemporary statisticians in both industry and academia.
