Abstract:

Federal statisticians can make a significant contribution to the war on terrorism. This discussion focuses upon cross-agency problems in counterterrorism; for example, classification rules are useful in profiling dangerous airline passengers, or flagging criminal financial transactions, or screening visa applicants. Similarly, risk analysis applies in smallpox vaccination, nuclear device detection, and targeted inspection problems. Other cross-agency statistical issues in counterterrorism concern biometric identification, confidentiality protection, and biosurveillance. This roundtable will describe what is being done and what more the federal statistical community could do on these various fronts.
