Abstract:

There are few publications presenting material on the Average Run Length properties of control charts for monitoring the variability of a continuous process. The few listings in the literature focus on Shewhart-type control charts, which are known to lack power for small and moderate sized changes in the process variance. Most articles focus on increases in variability and they do not cover decreases. This paper presents new results based on extensions of existing control charts to the EWMA and CUSUM charts. The ARL results show that our proposed charts are far more powerful in detecting increases and decreases in the process variance.
