Keywords: experimental design ; engineering design ; product design
Abstract:

The engineering design process is one of the most critical functions in industry--it is the process by which new products are conceived and brought to market. Many popular statistical techniques are critical to this process and many statisticians and quality professionals have encouraged the use of various statistically based techniques (such as experimental design, robust design, and Ishikawa's seven tools) for use in the design process. We will discuss the engineering design process, the impact that statistical methods have had on the process, any failures of implementation and communication of these methods, and how statistics and statisticians can understand and positively impact the engineering design process in the future.
